ABSTRACT

We report the results of research in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, originally designed to quickly and easily assess the level and nature of participation by local peoples in forest management. During the initial phase of field testing criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, we had identified that people’s participation was an important issue. As we examined our early results, we realized that we could not specify, to our satisfaction, the relevant causal links between sustainable commercial forest management on one hand and the participatory behavior and needs of the people most closely involved on the other.
