ABSTRACT

Concerns about toxic chemicals helped spawn modern environmentalism and with it the growth of environmental regulation in the United States. In Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote movingly about the ecological effects of the pesticide DDT. Published in 1962, the book raised the specter of widespread environmental destruction as a result of synthetic chemicals and helped shape modern views about our relationship with the environment.
