ABSTRACT

I will be putting forward a thesis about how explanation by externalist states works. My plan is to go on to indicate some of the consequences of this thesis for a range of issues in the philosophy of mind. The range of issues includes the correctness of teleological approaches to content, the nature of subpersonal psychology, and the explanation of self-knowledge. One of the early tasks must also be to account for the possibility of externalist explanations, in the face of several arguments in the literature that it must be impossible.
