ABSTRACT
Among the world's oceans and seas, the Mediterranean vies for the distinction of having the longest history of intensive use and cultural importance. But ironically, this semi-enclosed sea is at once highly treasured and undervalued. While both ancient civilizations and modern societies have acknowledged the sea's importance, large swaths of the basin remain unmanaged and open to threats.
