chapter  7
Mountain Culture: No Hillbillies Here
ByChristine Ballengee Morris
Pages 10

The hillbilly is a cartoon figure, alternately comedic or sinister, that contrasts with the people of Appalachian Mountain Culture to whom it refers. This image portrays Mountain people as lazy, stupid, sloppy, violent, moonshining, tobacco spitting, barefoot, and incestuous. In fact, Appalachian mountaineers possess no more of these attributes than any other group. Virtually every ethnic group in the United States can be on both the giving and receiving ends of demeaning stereotyping. The label hillbilly is as offensive as derogatory labels other groups endure. The difference is that many other labels are being revised with positive definitions. Hillbilly is not.
