ABSTRACT

In four of the statements indigenous peoples urge governments, scientists, academic and other organizations, and indigenous peoples themselves to adopt, develop or comply with ethical standards and guidelines, such as codes of ethics and conduct. The statement from the Voices of the Earth Conference recommends that (1993): ‘Governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as scientific and professional groups, should develop codes of ethics and conduct regarding respect for indigenous peoples and their intellectual, cultural and scientific property’ (‘Cultural, Scientific and Intellectual Property’, paragraph 3).
