ABSTRACT

Concerns for the exhaustibility of fossil fuels, for energy security and for climate protection have led to the increasing promotion of renewable energy sources (Mangels-Voegt, 2004). Bioenergy – the conversion of organic matter from agriculture, forestry and wastes to energy – is among the spectrum of ‘renewables’, the one with the largest yet unexploited potential and with the greatest impact in terms of physical area. It has a particularly high impact on agricultural and forestry lands.
