ABSTRACT

The data on patterns of emotion presented here were gathered in 1959 as part of one of several studies carried out in order to provide a general cultural perspective that would be helpful in evaluating the symptoms of Japanese psychiatric patients and the nature of relationships between patients and staff in Japanese psychiatric hospitals (Caudill, 1961; Caudill and Doi, 1963). It seemed to me that behavior and methods of treatment in the hospital should be related to broader patterns of values and emotions in Japanese culture, and I made a beginning attempt specifically to explore these latter topics.
