ABSTRACT

The main focus of this book is on crop biomass, thus ignoring alternative feedstocks such as animal products or wastes or biomass generated by algal production, which does not imply any valuation of their potential contribution to – or role in – the biobased economy. It is important to realize that so far biobased production is mainly utilizing crop feedstocks, and this must be expected to remain so – at least for some time. In the future, algae in particular might be expected to play a much more important role in the generation of biobased feedstocks (be it for fuels, chemicals or other bioproducts).
