ABSTRACT

The world energy consumption grew by an average 2.2 per cent annually between 1971 and 2006; in developed countries by 1.4 per cent and in developing countries by 3.2 per cent. These differences were more marked in 2006, when consumption grew by 2.7 per cent globally; 8.5 per cent in developing countries and −0.2 per cent in the OECD region. As shown in Figure 10.1, the energy consumption in the OECD countries stabilized from 2000 onwards and was recently surpassed by non-OECD members.
