ABSTRACT

Bushmeat, or more accurately wild meat, can be defined as wild animal protein that is hunted for human consumption. The current unsustainable levels of trade in this resource in tropical regions are now considered one of the most pressing and insidious conservation problems. This chapter will evaluate the current situation concerning the bushmeat trade and the problems associated with it. It will then consider whether currently proposed solutions are likely to work, addressing whether the agendas of international animal welfare and protectionist groups are justified, and will consider where regulation is most likely to be effective at controlling the trade.
