ABSTRACT

Accessible fuelwood (woodfuel) supplies Are the quantities of wood that can actually be used for energy purposes under normal conditions of supply and demand

Agrofuels Are biofuels obtained either as a product or by-product of agriculture; the term covers mainly biomass materials derived directly from fuel crops and agricultural, agro-industrial and animal by-products (FAO)

Air-dry The term refers to the stage after the fuel has been exposed for some time to local atmospheric conditions, between harvesting and conversion of the fuel either to another fuel or by combustion to heat energy

Air-dried weight This is the weight of wood in air-dry state, after being exposed over time to local atmospheric conditions. Weight of wood can be given in air-dry state or wet state. It may contain between 8 and 12 per cent (dry basis) moisture

Air-dried yield (wood) The approximate mass of air-dry wood which would be obtained on drying or wetting of a sample of wood per unit volume of a sample

Air-dry density The density based on the weight and volume of wood in equilibrium with the atmospheric conditions

Alcohol fuels A general term which denotes mainly ethanol, methanol and butanol, usually obtained by fermentation, when used as a fuel

Ancillary energy That energy required to produce inputs to agricultural production consumed in a single activity or production period; e.g. the energy sequestered in fertilizers, chemicals, etc.
