ABSTRACT

By late 2003, about 20 countries worldwide had established legal requirements for SEA, and others had adopted SEA guidelines. This book does not aim to discuss these systems, excellent as many of them are. More information on specific countries is available elsewhere, for instance:

• internationally: Dalal-Clayton and Sadler (2003); International Association for Impact Assessment et al (2002);

• European countries: Kleinschmidt and Wagner (1998); • countries in transition: Verheyen and Nagels (1996); • francophone countries: Secretariat Francophone (2000); and • early SEA systems: Sadler and Verheem (1996) and Therivel and

Partidario (1996).
