ABSTRACT

In his report, ‘In Larger Freedom’, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan observed that:

another serious concern is loss of biodiversity, which is occurring at an unprecedented rate within and across countries. Worrying in its own right, this trend also severely undermines health, livelihoods, food production and clean water, and increases the vulnerability of populations to natural disasters and climate change. To reverse these trends, all governments should take steps, individually and collectively, to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Johannesburg commitment to achieve a significant reduction in the loss of biodiversity by 2010.
