ABSTRACT

Nature conservation can cause conflicts when there are incompatible interests in environmental resources. This especially happens when conservation infringes on local economic activities. This chapter discusses how the successful conservation of grey seals has caused economic losses to coastal fishing. Conflict has arisen because seals take fish from nets, which leads to substantial economic losses to fishermen. This case is especially complicated and unusual because the problem has arisen as a side effect of successful conservation, which contrasts with many other nature conservation conflicts where the relationship between economic activities and conservation is direct, and where economic activities jeopardize conservation goals.
