ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the wider context of urban environmental design issues, and outlines the existing related knowledge, research and experience. The emphasis is on the larger scale urban context, with particular reference to vernacular or traditional examples; experiences and issues raised by recent urban design practice; and a review of the current technical and social aspects that are related to urban environmental issues.
