ABSTRACT

In 1998, the value of woodcarvings exported from Bali was about US$100 million (Biro Pusat Statistik Propinsi Bali, 2000). Gianyar district is the centre of the industry; but the industry has expanded and significant volumes of semifinished woodcarvings are now produced in other districts and channelled through Gianyar-based enterprises. Thus, the development of woodcarving in Gianyar has had a positive impact on adjacent districts. The woodcarving industry has gone through many changes; but what is most fascinating has been its ability to adapt and prosper, while at the same time moving to sustainable resource use.
