ABSTRACT

Example: swiftlet nests In 1994 Italy proposed that several species of swiftlets (Collocalia spp, the Southeast Asian species that form the basis of the birds’ nest trade) be up-listed to Appendix II of CITES. This proposal was based on several indications of declines in local populations. The most influential, however, was a reported 85 per cent decline at the Niah caves, Malaysia, between 1935 and 1990. Allied to this proposal was a TRAFFIC report indicating a range of potential conservation problems that may have been occurring alongside an expansion in the trade of swiftlet nests (Er et al, 1995).
