ABSTRACT
During the 20th century, industrial farming systems have resulted in the exploitation of farm livestock with terrible welfare consequences. This has been made possible by the demand for cheap meat; the low cost of feed and energy; the inappropriate use of new technology; vast-scale, labour-efficient livestock units; and the availability of veterinary medicines, particularly antibiotics, to suppress disease and promote animal growth.
