ABSTRACT

Scientific evidence confirms that climate change is already taking place and that most of the warming observed during the past 50 years is due to human activities. 1 In Southern Africa, climate change projections suggest increased variability in rainfall, more frequent extreme events and increased temperatures. 2 These will occur even if global emissions were to be reduced in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. In Cape Town, a significant number of past disasters and events have been associated with weather conditions and the concern is that these may occur more frequently in the future. 3
