ABSTRACT

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) elders have many things in common with their peers. All elders—who, for the purposes of this chapter, are those over the age of sixty-five—are affected by increased health care needs as they grow older and encounter ageism, increasing isolation, challenges associated with day-to-day living, and living on a fixed income while the cost of living climbs. At the same time, unique challenges remain for LGBT seniors that the aging, health care, and LGBT networks must address.

Ageism is defined as prejudice or negative stereotypes about people based on chronological age. This marginalization can result in a damaging impact on one's ability to thrive socially, economically, and physically.
