ABSTRACT

The end of Parts I and II – Chapters 1–6 and 7–9, respectively – is an appropriate moment to take stock of the book's progress and introduce the next chapters. Figure 5.1 – a modified version of the figure first introduced in Chapter 2 – has been used as the structuring thread that connects the different parts of the book and it would be advisable to go back to it and review it for a moment. The shaded box showed the interrelations between the determinants of energy security, i.e. a system of energy supply corridors and related indicators reflecting a country's dependence and vulnerability from exporting and transit countries, and the geopolitical situation affecting the exporting and transit countries and the international arena, directly related to the system of energy corridors. Any country's perception of energy security depends on the assessment of the vulnerability of its energy corridors and of the energy risk posed by the surrounding geopolitical context. Chapters 3–4 and 7–9 offered traditional and innovative suggestions to ensure that the assessment is as reliable as possible.
