Who can forget one’s first kiss, the rush of puppy love, the tribulations of tending a broken heart? These are memorialized and celebrated moments in the United States. Whether one actually goes through these experiences or bears witness to them, one assumption is pervasive and unchallenged: the actors playing out these moments are unquestionably heterosexual.
