Virgil S. Ward’s theory of differentiation has received a great deal of attention since it was published in his ground-breaking text, Educating the Gifted: An Axiomatic Approach , in 1961. Differentiation is a well-known concept in the fi eld of education; it is the subject of countless articles, books, and empirical research. There are hundreds of titles in print with the word “differentiation” in their headings, yet Ward’s infl uential text is out-of-print and diffi cult to fi nd.
