ABSTRACT

Semblance or “the semblant” is a word/concept that has two different yet related meanings. The fi rst refers to the classical distinction between appearance and reality. The second acceptation refers to the face or countenance. Appearance and face are also related through the concept of the mask and the Jungian concept of the persona. Mask and persona point in the direction of social appearances and norms and the imaginary ego. These are in contradistinction to the psychic reality of desire and the subject of the unconscious.
