ABSTRACT

For over a century, waves of immigrants have left their mark on Northbridge, just across the tracks from Perth’s main railway station. Chinese, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese and many other new arrivals settled there, often moving on over time. Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s were followed by Greeks and Italians in the mid-twentieth century and a more diverse array of immigrants since the 1970s. Many set up their own small retail and hospitality businesses along Northbridge’s main streets. They also established places of worship and ethnic associations that feature prominently in the area’s built and social environments. Today, Northbridge is home to a great variety of immigrant enterprises, reflecting the multi-ethnic character of Northbridge itself.
