ABSTRACT

Gabriel Imomotimi Gbaingbain Okara was born in April 1921 in Bumodi, in the Ijaw district of the Delta region, Nigeria. He attended Government College at Umuahia, Nigeria (1935–40), and later studied journalism at Northwestern University in the United States (1956–59). He has taken up various positions in his lifetime: teacher, printer, and bookbinder at Lagos and Enugu, setting up the Government Press, principal information officer for Eastern Nigerian Government Service, general manager of Rivers State Newspaper and Television Corporation, and commissioner for information and broadcasting for the government of the State of Rivers. Presently, he is with the Rivers State Council for Arts and Culture, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
