ABSTRACT

This is an account of a family business, written primarily for those who are, or have been, associated with it; but written also in the hope that it may be found of some value by those who are interested in the history of English economic development during the past century. There may also be something for future students of this eventful hundred years. The subject, which in itself is of importance, has two other attractions. It represents a further chapter in the story of that remarkable group of Unitarian families who played so conspicuous a part in the social and economic life of nineteenth century Liverpool : and it reflects the business career of one of their most outstanding personalities, the Rt. Hon. Charles Booth, P.C., F.R.S.
