ABSTRACT

In the case of Alfred Booth and Company, where there are still some who remember its founders, the work of Alfred and Charles Booth in this sphere remains the basic influence. The traditions thus established by Alfred and Charles Booth have been maintained by succeeding generations in economic conditions which differed materially from those of pre-1914. The creation of successive generations of ‘Booth men’ has not been, however, solely a result of careful selection, personal interest and high pay. Until the 1920's, Alfred Booth and Company were predominantly employers of American rather than English industrial labour, which in itself involved a degree of conformity to different methods and outlook in the sphere of labour relations. The most obvious characteristic of the old merchant organization which was carried on into the firm of Alfred Booth and Company, was the idea of an ordered training in business matters.
