ABSTRACT

It is difficult to generalise about the impact of visual impairment on a child's development. The needs of each child will vary and factors such as personality, age of onset of impairment, degree of visual loss, the presence or absence of additional disabilities and cognitive ability will make each child unique. The aim of this chapter is to provide some general, practical advice that may be useful to teachers with little experience of teaching children with a significant visual impairment. More detailed advice about many of the issues which are introduced here can be found in other chapters.
