ABSTRACT

Transition from childhood to adulthood can take many years. The smoothness of the passage depends upon both the characteristics of the individual and the environment into which he or she is being received. For young people with a visual impairment, negotiating the complex, confusing and occasionally hostile forces of the adult world can be particularly frustrating. It is no easy task, and one which young people and their personal and professional mentors must recognise and take seriously, beginning preparation sooner rather than later.
