ABSTRACT

Modern foreign languages were traditionally regarded as subjects appropriate for study only by the more able. During the last two decades provision has extended dramatically, and the National Curriculum Orders in England and Wales now include a modern foreign language as a foundation subject for all pupils from the age of 11 to 16. This raises questions about staffing, resources and methodology, particularly in the light of current recommended teaching practice with its emphasis on visual input to convey meaning. This chapter discusses some of these issues and their implications for pupils with a visual impairment.
