ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to the population of children described as having multiple disabilities and a visual impairment (MDVI). Following a brief historical overview the following areas are considered: the population, the nature and causes of multiple disabilities and current research issues relating to the population. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the role of parents and professionals working with these children.
