The Effects of Literacy Hour and Phonics Teaching on Poor Readers' Phonological and Literacy Skills: Case Studies of Children with English as an Additional Language

The Phonological Assessment Battery (PhAB) (Frederickson et al. 1997) is an instrument designed to measure phonological processing. There are norms for children from 6:00 to 14 : 1 1 years and it is intended to be used with children whose literacy progress is causing concern. The framework within which it was conceptualised has been provided by Frith ( 1995). The PhAB includes the following tests :

1 . Alliteration 2. Rhyme 3 . Spoonerisms 4. Naming Speed: Picture Naming Speed and Digit Naming Speed 5. Fluency: Semantic Fluency, Alliteration Fluency, and Rhyme Fluency 6. Non-word Reading.
