ABSTRACT

Roy, a seventy-one-year-old retired merchant, lives in a small rural community with his wife. His children are grown and live many miles away in other states. Roy has diabetes. His wife works at a local department store to maintain the health insurance that helps pay for Roy’s medical supplies and prescription drugs which can cost more than $1,000 per month. Roy’s diabetes has resulted in a below-the-knee amputation on one leg. He also has numerous other chronic conditions, but is still able to live independently with his wife in their two-story country home.
