ABSTRACT
People outside the fi eld may fi nd it surprising, but human dignity is a contested concept in bioethics. The dignity controversy is a relatively recent development that began just a few years ago. Until that time, people addressing bioethics issues sometimes invoked the concept of human dignity, but it was neither a central focus of nor a controversial topic among scholars in the fi eld.
