ABSTRACT

I claim expertise neither in medicine nor in ethics, but I do study public argument. And if it is true that our scientifi c and medical knowledge have outpaced our ethical understanding, then even more has our ethical understanding outpaced our ability to argue effectively about moral or ethical issues. This condition is especially serious because public argument is the means by which a democratic society comes to judgment and decision about matters of controversy.
