ABSTRACT

Motivation and behaviour are broad constructs. Motivation is a much-used term within educational discourse, with an implication that we know what it is, we can recognise it in an individual and we can, through manipulating variables such as teaching methods and curricular content, develop it. Behaviour tends to be discussed in the context of classroom disruption, though increased emphasis on developing the whole child within school contexts has placed a welcome focus on the development of social and emotional behaviours. Within this chapter the focus is upon those behaviours associated with the development and expression of motivation within school contexts. Drawing on sources from our own context of England and making links to other nations, the stance we adopt is that a focus on the behaviours associated with motivation provides educators with a clear purpose for their practice.
