ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the evolution of a whole new generation of universities that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, in response to contemporary environmental imperatives. The chapter traces the development of the institutions and identifies five main strands of institutional strategy, their operational manifestations, and issues arising therefrom particularly in the changed circumstances of the late 1980s and 1990s.
