ABSTRACT

Czech higher education institutions own the right to hire academic staff and to determine the number of academic positions. A higher education institution determines academic salaries, which should be described in the Internal Salary Regulations (part of the institutional statute). Nonsalary benefits provide health and retirement insurance, paid vacations, and sabbaticals. Some additional benefits can include supplementary pension insurance, low-interest loans, contributions toward boarding expenses, and other items. A contract can be concluded for limited or indefinite time; tenure does not exist. The salaries of higher academic ranks (associate professors and professors) are comparable with those of the best-paid job categories, but they can differentiate significantly by institution, field, and gender.
