ABSTRACT
A binary system with universities and universities of applied sciences, academic staff dominated by research assistants without doctoral degrees, limited contracts or opportunities for promotion, and an ongoing salary reform in Germany’s 16 states make the salary conditions comparable to a rag rug. Due to social insurance and benefits, the income of these academics is quite good, related to other countries, though uncertain career prospects make universities appear less attractive employers—especially for young researchers.
