ABSTRACT

The dawn of the 21st century saw India witnessing competing demands for talent in the knowledge economy, occasioned by globalization and the turning away of the best of talents from the academic profession. To arrest this trend, the salaries of teachers have since been upwardly revised to an extent unthinkable a decade back. The professoriate is now comfortably placed in the middle class, and the academic profession has again become attractive in the employment market. Simultaneously, to tone up the quality of the profession, requirements for both recruitment and career advancement within it have been redefined. This chapter discusses the salient features and key issues in the recruitment and remuneration of the professoriate in India.
