ABSTRACT

In the context of an economic downturn, the current challenges of postsecondary education in Latvia confront a heavy impact on the income structure of higher education institutions. The organization of academic work in Latvia is characterized by highly decentralized employment agreements. The current national data-gathering system is not sufficient for analyzing the conditions of faculty-staff employment and remuneration. There is no research currently available on the remuneration of faculty at higher education institutions in Latvia. The existing academic salary levels encourage competent faculty to look for possibilities abroad. Further data collection and analyses are required to properly analyze trends of academic salaries in Latvia.
