ABSTRACT

The salaries of academics in Malaysia are quite attractive, allowing for an uppermiddle-class status—especially for academics with a full professor rank, which is possible for every academic. Further, these remunerations vary across disciplines, being most attractive for those in medical and related disciplines. The remunerations of academics in the public higher education institutions are better than their private counterparts due to the salary structure, nonfinancial benefits, tax arrangements, and retirement service. These factors have discouraged academics from leaving public institutions and minimize the need for supplementary employment.
