ABSTRACT

In the companion to the present volume (Hauke and Alister, 2001: 95–109), Jane Ryan provides a fascinating interpretation of the film Dark City (Proyas, 1998). The reader may refer to the chapter in its entirety for the richness of its treatment of symbolism in the film, which I shall only summarize here, as, in Ryan’s words, ‘the journey of the hero, his goal being that of individuation, of psychic wholeness and healing’ (Ryan, 2001: 95). From a Jungian perspective the film is indeed capable of such an interpretation, as Ryan’s detailed analysis of the characters and of the themes clearly shows. She regards the film as reflecting some of the myths which provide such a treasure house of pointers to contemporary psychological issues as well as virtually timeless existential concerns.
