ABSTRACT
This chapter will review and offer some personal insight into the historical background of the relationship between events and the environment, examine models relating to the environment, explore the concept of sustainability, review changing attitudes to the environment in the past twenty years including those in the event industry and its supporting educational infrastructure, identify and evaluate recent initiatives in the sustainable environmental management of events and suggest areas for further research. It will use a case study of the Olympics to illustrate and contextualise some of these themes.
