ABSTRACT

Recent developments in the use of digital technologies within society have created a convergence of print-based text and electronic texts. Some have argued that the convergence of technologies—for example, engaging students in the composition of text that includes graphics, video, images, and audio signs—has the potential to have more of an impact within education than previous technologies (MacArthur, 2006). On the other hand, some educators are skeptical, noting that in the past people had predicted that the then new technologies of radio or television would radically alter schooling. You might be asking: How are recent technology changes any different from what has gone on before? Are these changes really transformative or are they just the typical response to new technologies?
