ABSTRACT

Location: Southeast Afghanistan, about 300 miles southwest of Kābul, on a level, fertile plain between the Tanrk and Arghandab Rivers, in the Kandahār province.

Description: City occupying a strategic position on the trade and invasion routes into Afghanistan; the southern point of the Kābul-Kandahār-Herāt triangle, control of which has been deemed necessary for military dominance of the country. Once the capital of Afghanistan, it is, after Kābul, the nation's second-largest city.
