ABSTRACT

Location: In southern Tibet, at the eastern end of the Tibetan Himalayas, elevation 11,975 feet; near the Lhasa River (a tributary of the Brahmaputra, here known as the Tsangpo).

Description: Lhasa is the capital of Tibet, which since 1950 has been occupied by the People's Republic of China. Lhasa first became the capital of Tibet in the seventh century and gained lasting religious importance during the seventeenth century.
