ABSTRACT

Gobind Singh separated himself from the spiritual focus of the Sikh religion, abolishing the office of the gurū, for instance. Determining that the Ādi Grant h would hence forward fulfill the office, he bestowed the new name of Gurū Granth Sahib on the holy writings. He also removed his headquarters from Amritsar in 1699, reestablishing himself at Anandpur and further weakening the organization's link with its spiritual antecedents. After waging war in the Punjab for decades, Gobind Singh eventually made peace with the Mughals, and for this reconciliation with the Muslim author ities he was assassinated by a Hindu in 1708.
